Need for full time care in patients with Alzheimer's and Agitation Lead Investigator: Myrlene Sanon Institution : Otsuka Pharmaceutical E-Mail : Myrlene.Sanon@otsuka-us.com Proposal ID : 1057 Proposal Description: Behavioral symptoms including agitation or aggression is prevalent in individuals with AD with literature estimates ranging from 24 to 68. A few studies have suggested that such symptoms may be an important predictor of institutionalization, however these studies were limited to very small sample sizes. Institutionalization has been found to be associated with cognitive decline and quality of life worsening, and has been estimated to cost over $200 billion in the United States (US) in 2012 (among elderly individuals and younger individuals with disabilities) representing almost 10 of all US personal health care spending. Our study objective is to assess the incremental risk of institutionalization (or need for full time care) associated with agitation/behavioral symptoms in individuals with AD/Dementia.
